Happy Chinese New Year!
My family and I celebrated the coming of the year of the tiger by dining out on Chinese New Year’s Eve and talking to some of our relatives in China the next morning. They said that they are off until the ninth day of the new year, which made me insanely jealous.
Every Chinese New Year, my mom always makes turnip cake and New Year cake. It’s been a tradition since I was a kid, but from what my relatives in China tell me, many in China don’t even make these dishes anymore. Instead, they just go out and buy them from vendors.
I also got in a nice 2.5-hour chat with my dad to help me gather information for the book I’m working on about my family’s history. Oh, and the Tar Heels actually won a game. All in all, a pretty nice weekend.
Oh, and if you’re interested, check out performances from the New Year Gala on CCTV. It’s kind of like the equivalent of bringing in the new year with Dick Clark.
And finally, a clip of fireworks to bring in the new year:

Happy New Year – we had nian gao this year too (bought from Asia Market though, not homemade). Can't wait to read your book – following your progress!
Thanks Emma. Happy New Year to you too. I actually always liked the turnip cake more than the Nian Gao :-)
All the more nian gao for me! :)
