USEFUL RESOURCES FOR SOME, USELESS RANTS FOR OTHERS

Essays from China: The Stately Flag Platform

This ode to an inanimate object came from a third grader and is one of several essays in the collection describing some part of the school grounds. Never thought that sunflowers would make something look “stately”, did you?

The Stately Flag Platform

Every day when I come to school, as soon as I walk through the back door, I see the stately flag platform in the center of the rear playground. The platform has two levels and is made of smooth, grayish-red marble. On the platform is a silver stainless steel flag pole. This flag pole is about three stories high and glitters under the bright sunlight. At the top of the flag pole is a Chinese flag, which looks very beautiful against the clear blue sky. Around the platform are ten stainless steel fence poles, linked by stainless steel chains, looking like ten guards standing hand in hand and protecting the flag.

There is an oval flower bed on both sides of the platform, with tall areca trees and short and stout palm trees. Around the trees are flowers and grasses of all colors, like a colorful carpet. There are also several pots of sunflowers around the flower beds, making the entire flag platform appear even more stately and beautiful.

I really love our beautiful campus, and I love our stately flag platform even more!
