More Layoffs at the News & Observer
More bad news for the folks at the News & Observer (Raleigh, N.C.) today:
- 78 positions to be cut, including the equivalent of 27 full-time jobs in the newsroom
- Salary cuts ranging from 2.5 percent for the lowest-paid employees to 10 percent for the highest paid (no cut for those making less than $25,000)
- 1 week unpaid furlough between May 1 and Oct. 31.
According to a post on the rumor mill at sportsjournalists.com:
- All part-timers on copy desk are gone
- Everybody brought in for CCI transition gone (for those of you who don’t know, CCI is a content management system popular in publishing circles)
- At least one full-timer expected to go from news copy desk/copy editor. If no volunteers for buyout, it goes by seniority
Even as a former employee of the N&O’s former competitor, it still makes me sad to see a quality news organization being slashed yet again. My heart goes out to the people at the paper. I know people there, have friends who work there. Good luck to all of them.
