USEFUL RESOURCES FOR SOME, USELESS RANTS FOR OTHERS

Help Me Pick My Entry for Travel Photo Contest

So right after I spent the last two weeks processing and uploading photos from my trip to China, Courtney alerts me to a travel photo contest. I’m going to submit something from my trip, but am trying to figure out which one of the bazillion pictures I took to send in. Help me decide! The criteria for the contest are:

  • 50% creativity/originality
  • 25% written expression (the caption that I will write for the photo)
  • 25% relevance to theme of sharing travel experiences (whatever that means)

Here are some of my favorites (or, if you have a few hours to kill, go pick out something from my entire China trip collection):

candles
Big Wild Goose Pagoda, Xi’an
buddha
Tian Tan Buddha (might be the
front runner right now). There’s also a lighter photo of the same shot here, though I like this one a little more because the darkness accentuates the sunlight.
duck
Dried duck and sausages in the
street market on Lantau Island
child
Mother and child. General Yue’s
Mausoleum in Hangzhou
suzhou
Fish being air-dried outside the
Lion Forest Garden in Suzhou
munch
Courtney runs afoul of one of
the guardian lion statues at
the Big Wild Goose Pagoda.
head
How to get ahead in China.
kunming
A couple take a stroll on a frozen Lake Kunming at the Summer Palace in Beijing.

  1. John, I really like both of the photos at Wild Goose Pagoda, the candles and Courtney with her hand in mouth. I’m partial to “Courtney runs afoul” That’s a one-of-a-kind and you’d have quite a story to share about your travel experience, not to mention her relentless pursuit of Starbucks.

  2. I interpreted "sharing travel experiences" to mean they wanted a picture that told a story. Though the Buddha picture is beautiful and the hanging fish just screams, "China!," I'd go with something that has people in it. I'm thinking of the fiddler singing his heart out at the Summer Palace. (I do like the expression on the little guy's face in the "Mother and child" one, though.)
