USEFUL RESOURCES FOR SOME, USELESS RANTS FOR OTHERS

jennings
Don’t fail me now, Greg Jennings.

I’ve got one win in hand and could pull out another one tonight if Greg Jennings and Nick Collins combine for a little more than 7.5 points. If they produce like they usually do, I should be ok, but you never know. If only Peyton Manning hadn’t refused to throw the ball to Reggie Wayne last night. In my other league, I ran up 101 points, yet feel a little bit dissatisfied because I left Randy Moss and his 3 TDs on the bench. I guess I can’t complain too much. So, the team that started the year with a bench full of third-string QBs (thanks to a wacky autodraft) is about to be 8-4, while the team that looked loaded (and is, since I’m still leading the league in scoring) is in danger of falling to 5-7 and staying one game out of the playoff picture. I love fantasy football . . .

Saw it coming:

  • The Broncos’ tank job against the Raiders. Every year, Denver gets off to a hot start. And every year, it proceeds to go in the tank after the first five weeks and become a mediocre bunch the rest of the season. Throw in the fact that this was an AFC West rivalry game, and you could just see an underwhelming effort coming from the Broncos. But hey, at least Payton Hillis got me some yards and a TD.
  • The Jets’ win over the previously undefeated Titans. The Jets had been playing very well lately, having won four in a row going into the game against the Titans and looking very impressive on offense.
  • Matt Forte’s big game against St. Louis. His 132 rushing yards and 2 TDs were right in line with what other backs have been doing against the hapless Rams defense, which is giving up 162.3 yards rushing per game and has now allowed 20 rushing TDs in 11 games. That’s good news if you own Ronnie Brown, Tim Hightower, Maurice Morris, Frank Gore, and Michael Turner, the backs who will face St. Louis the rest of the way.
  • The Lions blowing a 17-0 lead. They are 0-11 for a reason, you know.

Where did this come from?

  • UNC’s debacle against N.C. State. I’ll admit it. I didn’t expect the Tar Heels to look as bad as they did on Saturday. Yes, I thought it was about 50-50 whether they win or lose, but not 41-10. I guess the UNC football players figured that now that the basketball season is underway, they don’t need to pay attention to football anymore.
  • Michael Turner’s four TDs against the Panthers. Turner has been a good back this year, but the Panthers’ defense hasn’t been bad, and certainly not so bad that you would expect four TDs from Turner.
  • The bevy of high-scoring games on Sunday: Buffalo 54, KC 31. New England 48, Miami 28. Atlanta 45, Carolina 28. N.Y. Giants 37, Arizona 29. OK, you would expect the Giants and Cardinals to run up the score, but Buffalo and KC? It sure looks like quite a few defenses took Sunday off.
  • Clinton Portis’ whole season. He hasn’t looked this good since his Denver days. He’s averaging a full yard better per carry than he did last year, and he’s almost matched his yardage output from 16 games last season in only 11 games this year. He has six 100-yard games this season and has gone over 120 yards in each of them. Of course, if he was still in Denver, Mike Shanahan would probably have him platooning with Payton Hillis right now.
  • Matt Cassel’s last two games. Tom Brady’s fill-in has thrown for 815 yards and six TDs in the last two weeks. He has also thrown 94 passes in that span. Perhaps the Patriots are finally getting comfortable with him under center. He won’t be starting in New England when Tom Brady comes back next season, but his performance the last couple weeks might’ve earned him a starting job somewhere in the league.

  1. Hey John,

Who the hell is Payton Hillis? He sounds like a country singer.

BTW, UNC just turned the ball over again.

  2. Peyton Hillis is my No. 2 starting running back. Yes, I am that desperate (it was either him or Cedric Benson).

I’m almost hoping UNC will lose to Duke this week so that they fall to a crap bowl. Boise would do nicely.
