New Star Trek Trailer — I Am Not Amused
I watched the new trailer for the Star Trek movie last night, and I am no longer ambivalent about the movie. I am now clearly leaning toward the “this is not going to be good” side, though no matter what, I’ll still go see it.
As one of my friends said, it’s like “Stardate 90210″ — a bunch of models barely out of puberty flying around in the Enterprise. The trailer makes the movie look like something along the lines of the Transformers movie — lots of explosions and sex, not so much plot. If you are into that kind of movie, fine. But that’s not Star Trek. I can appreciate trying to reach out to audiences outside the hardcore Trekkies base, but from what I’ve read and seen, this movie is starting to look like it’s swerving so far away from the essence of Star Trek that it’ll alienate that base of loyal fans. Here’s hoping I’m wrong.

Agreed. I’m hoping Leonard Nimoy’s involvement is a good sign, but I suspect his role will be little more than a cameo. This looks like dreck. Why can’t we get the Worf movie we desperately deserve?
I’m hoping that the trailer was aimed at non-Trek fans and was not really representative of the movie as a whole. After all, fans are going to see the movie no matter how terrible it sounds, so maybe the marketing department was trying to get a different audience interested in the film (which, to judge by the trailer, is an audience of 13-year-old boys).
Well, one can hope, anyway. I’m fearing that the movie will come out looking like a generic action flick with characters who just happen to be named Kirk, McCoy, and Spock. I’m not in the least impressed by the underwear model they’ve got playing Kirk (Kirk’s supposed to be paunchy, people! Paunchy!), though their choice for Spock is credible, at least in terms of looks. And kiddie Kirk was just annoying. Why is he driving a 300-year-old car, anyway?
