USEFUL RESOURCES FOR SOME, USELESS RANTS FOR OTHERS

colston
Marques Colston, in the act of not producing points for me on Sunday against the Chiefs.

Well, I knew last week’s one-game winning streak wasn’t going to last, and lo and behold, it didn’t. This week was a prime example of out-thinking myself in setting my fantasy football lineup. I actually did some research this week and started guys based on favorable matchups. The result: I left four players on the bench who combined for 54.35 points, while my entire starting lineup tallied 56.96. Ouch! It hurts even more because my opponent didn’t have a great week either, and I would’ve been able to pull out a victory had I just put two of those four guys in. I left three of the top 10 rushers this week on the bench (Ryan Grant, Thomas Jones, Joseph Addai), all of whom also found the end zone at least once. In their place, I started Marques Colston, who managed only 30 yards despite a favorable matchup against the Chiefs, and Matt Forte, who couldn’t take advantage of a porous Packers rushing defense because the Bears got so far behind. I also left Greg Jennings’ touchdown on the bench. Ugh!

  • DeAngelo Williams has been coming on like gangbusters lately, with three straight 100-yard games and four TDs in those three games.
  • All Donnie Avery (9 catches, 93 yards) needed to get back on track was to get cut from my fantasy roster. Thanks a lot Donnie. I’ll fix you good — by picking you back up.
  • It seems like every season for the past several years, the Eagles go into a fade around this time. That continued yesterday with a tie against the Bengals. THE BENGALS! By the way, Cincinnati is now on a two-game unbeaten streak. Watch out!
  • It was an excruciating week of football watching for me. It started on Monday night with my 49ers deciding to call a fullback dive from the 2-yard line on the last play of the game, and getting stuffed. Then, on Saturday, I watched a UNC football game from start to finish for the first time this year and immediately regretted it as I watched the Tar Heels screw around for three-plus quarters, then give up an 8-minute drive that ended with the game-winning field goal for Maryland, essentially knocking UNC out of the running for a spot in the ACC title game. Well, at least the 49ers took it out on the Rams yesterday.
  • Adding to my frustration this week: I picked up Patrick Hillis, the Broncos’ fullback, on a whim in my other league this week, but didn’t start him. So of course he goes out and scores two TDs, and I’m trailing by six points with a defensive player left. Beautiful.
  • It’s a good thing yards-per-carry doesn’t come into play in fantasy football, or I would be in even more trouble for starting Cedric Benson, who tallied 42 yards on 23 carries (1.8 YPC). Gotta give it to the Bengals for persistence though. That’s how you tie ballgames.

  1. Hey John,

Thanks for spotlighting the Chiefs doing something good for once this season. Also, have you seen the new Star Trek trailer? Man, I was kind of pissed. It looks like Stardate 90210.

Also, you need to give up Fantasy Football.

  2. Yeah, those pesky Chefs. And thanks to them, I’m now one spot out of the playoffs in my league, with the highest scoring team. Aarrgh. Haven’t seen the Trek trailer yet, but now I will. I saw the new Watchmen trailer yesterday though, and that looks pretty cool.
